Name vs username
Your name (TikTok also calls it a nickname) is what people see on your videos, in comments and in messages. It can be up to 30 characters, must follow the Community Guidelines, and is where symbols and fancy fonts go.
Your @username is your handle and your profile link: 2 to 24 characters, only letters, numbers, underscores and full stops, and it cannot end with a full stop.
Fonts, search and screen readers
Fancy letters are separate Unicode characters, so a name in 𝓼𝓬𝓻𝓲𝓹𝓽 may not match someone searching the plain word, and screen readers can read it as a list of symbol names. Many creators keep their real name or brand in plain letters and use symbols around it.
Can you have an invisible TikTok name?
Not documented
TikTok does not document blank names or bios, and we found no reliable test of invisible characters there. Your @username cannot be blank: it allows only letters, numbers, underscores and full stops. The invisible character tool explains each blank character and lets you copy them.
How to change your TikTok name
- Open your Profile and tap Edit profile.
- Tap Name, paste your new name with symbols (up to 30 characters) and save.
- You can change your name once every 7 days. Editing is not available on TikTok’s mobile website.
Your @username is in the same screen. It can change once every 30 days, changing it also changes your profile link, and an old username cannot be reclaimed straight away. Verified accounts have to contact TikTok.
