How to type a bullet point
The standard bullet is • (U+2022). Every device can type it, but the method differs. In Word and Google Docs, use the list shortcut rather than typing the symbol: you get proper indentation and the bullets realign when text wraps.
Apps without list formatting, such as Instagram captions, LinkedIn posts, TikTok bios, YouTube descriptions and most chat apps, need the symbol itself. Copy it from this page, or use the list maker to bullet a whole block of text at once. For nested lists, pick a style with a different marker for each level so the structure stays readable.
Choosing a bullet
- • ◦ ▪ are the classic first, second and third levels, the same ones Word uses.
- ➤ ▸ ‣ point the eye forward and suit steps and calls to action.
- ✓ ☐ ☑ make checklists and to-do lists.
- ① ❶ ⒈ number items without relying on the app to count.
- ♡ ✿ ⋆ are popular in aesthetic bios. See more in aesthetic symbols.
For every dot-shaped character see dot symbols; for the bullet's codes in every format see the bullet point symbol page.

Frequently asked questions
How do I type a bullet point on a keyboard? +
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0149 on the number pad (or Alt+7). On a Mac, press Option+8. On a Chromebook, press Ctrl+Shift+U, type 2022 and press Space. In Word and Google Docs, use the list shortcuts in the table above to start a real bulleted list.
How do I add bullet points on Instagram, LinkedIn or TikTok? +
Those apps have no list button, so copy a bullet symbol from this page and paste it at the start of each line. The list maker above does this for every line at once: type your lines, pick a style and copy the result.
What is the difference between •, · and ∙? +
The bullet • (U+2022) is the standard list marker. The middle dot · (U+00B7) is smaller and is used as a separator, as in "Home · About". The bullet operator ∙ (U+2219) is a maths symbol. For lists, use •.
Why does my pasted list lose its indentation? +
Many apps, including Instagram and most comment boxes, collapse runs of ordinary spaces. Choose the "Wide" indent in the list maker: it uses em spaces, which those apps keep.
How do I make a bullet point in Excel? +
Select the cell, hold Alt and type 0149 on the number pad (or Alt+7), then type your text. Press Alt+Enter to start a new line inside the same cell and add the next bullet.
What is the HTML code for a bullet point? +
Use • or • for the symbol on its own. For a real list, use a ul element with li items: the browser draws the bullets and handles wrapping and indentation for you.
