Discord name symbols

Discord has two names. Your display name, what people see in chat, can contain almost anything, including symbols, fancy fonts and emoji. Your unique username is strict. Build a display name below, or check a username against Discord’s rules.

Display name, nickname or username?

Your display name is how you appear across Discord: in DMs, in servers where you have no nickname, and in friend requests. A server nickname overrides it in that one server. Your username is the unique handle people use to add you; it no longer has a #0000 number.

Symbols, emoji and fancy fonts go in the display name and nicknames. The username takes only lowercase a–z, numbers, underscores and periods, and Discord also rejects usernames containing @, #, : or “discord”.

Fancy fonts and search

A display name in 𝓯𝓪𝓷𝓬𝔂 letters is made of different Unicode characters from the plain word, so people searching a member list for “fancy” may not find you, and screen readers may read it as a string of symbol names. Keep part of the name in plain letters if you want to be found.

Can you have an invisible Discord name?

Not documented

Not reliably. Discord says it limits “some zero-width and non-rendering characters” and trims leading, trailing and excess spaces, without listing which. A blank display name may be refused or stripped. The invisible character tool explains each blank character and lets you copy them.

How to change your Discord display name

  1. Open User Settings (the gear next to your name).
  2. Go to My Account, then Profiles.
  3. Edit Display Name, paste your new name with symbols, and save. You can change it as often as you like.

To change your username, use the Edit button next to Username in My Account. You need your password and a verified email or phone number, and you can change it up to twice a week. For a name in one server only, use Edit Per-server Profile or type /nick.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use symbols in a Discord name? +

In your display name and server nicknames, yes: Discord allows special characters, spaces, emoji and non-Latin letters there, up to 32 characters. Your username cannot contain symbols; it allows only lowercase a–z, 0–9, underscores and periods.

How do I get a fancy font in my Discord name? +

Discord has no font setting. Type your name into the maker on this page, copy a styled version (they are Unicode characters, not a font), and paste it into User Settings → My Account → Profiles → Display Name.

How often can I change my Discord username? +

Up to twice a week. Display names and server nicknames can be changed any time.

Can I have an invisible name on Discord? +

How long can a Discord name be? +

Display names and server nicknames: up to 32 characters. Usernames: 2 to 32. About Me: 190 characters including emoji and links.
