Symbols for usernames and gamertags
Every platform has its own rules for what goes in a name, and most put symbols in one field and not another. Here is what each one accepts, checked against its own help pages on 15 October 2026, with symbols to copy and a name maker in every guide.
Fortnite name symbols
Sometimes. Epic publishes no list of allowed characters; some Unicode symbols are reported to pass and others are refused.
PUBG name symbols
On PUBG Mobile, many symbols are reported to work. On PUBG: Battlegrounds (PC), no: nicknames allow only letters, numbers, - and _.
Free Fire name symbols
Yes, widely reported. Garena publishes no character list, but stylish symbols like ꧁꧂ 亗 〆 are common in Free Fire names. Emoji are reported to show as boxes.
Roblox name symbols
No. Roblox usernames and display names accept only letters, numbers and a single underscore (plus one space in display names). Symbols, emoji, fancy fonts and blank characters are refused.
Discord name symbols
Yes, in your display name, server nickname and About Me. No, in your username: that allows only a–z, 0–9, _ and .
TikTok name symbols
Yes, in your name (nickname) and bio, by wide report. No, in your @username: letters, numbers, _ and . only.
Instagram name symbols
Yes, in your name, bio, notes and captions, by wide report. No, in your username: letters, numbers, periods and underscores only.
Where symbols work, platform by platform
“Reported” means players and third-party guides say it works but the platform does not document it. Lengths are official unless marked.
| Platform | Name others see | Symbols | Length | Strict handle | Changing the name |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fortnite | Epic display name | Reported to work | 3–16 characters | — | Free, once every two weeks; needs a verified email |
| PUBG | PUBG Mobile nickname | Reported to work | Not published | PUBG: Battlegrounds nickname (PC): no symbols | Rename Card, at most once per day |
| Free Fire | Free Fire nickname | Reported to work | 12 characters (reported) | — | Diamonds or a Name Change Card (price varies) |
| Roblox | Display name | No symbols | 3–20 characters | Username (@name): no symbols | Free, once every 7 days |
| Discord | Display name | Symbols allowed | 1–32 characters | Username: no symbols | Any time |
| TikTok | Name (nickname) | Reported to work | Up to 30 characters | Username (@handle): no symbols | Once every 7 days |

Cool symbols for names
A mix of the symbols that appear most in published game-name lists and the decorations used in display names. Check the platform guide before you pay for a name change.
Three things that apply everywhere
Handles are strict, display names are not. A unique handle (your @username) has to work in links and mentions, so it is limited to letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks. Symbols go in the display name, nickname or bio.
Accepted is not the same as visible. A platform can accept a character that some players' phones cannot draw, and they see an empty box instead. The more common the symbol, the safer it is.
Fancy letters hide your name from search. 𝓡𝓪𝓿𝓮𝓷 is not the word Raven to a search box or a screen reader. Keep the part of your name people will search for in plain letters.
Frequently asked questions
Which games let you use symbols in your name? +
Free Fire and PUBG Mobile names commonly contain symbols, and some work in Fortnite, though none of the three publishes a list of allowed characters. Roblox does not allow symbols in usernames or display names, and PUBG: Battlegrounds on PC allows only letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores.
Why does my username reject symbols but my display name accepts them? +
Most platforms have a unique handle (your @username) used for links, mentions and logins, and a separate display name. Handles are limited to plain letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks so they can be typed and searched. Discord, TikTok and Instagram all put symbols in the display name only.
Why do symbols in my name show as boxes? +
The platform accepted the character but the device showing it has no font that contains it. Widely supported symbols such as ★ ♡ ツ display almost everywhere; rare ones can turn into empty boxes for some players.
Are fancy font names bad for search? +
They can be. Fancy letters are different Unicode characters from ordinary ones, so a search for the plain word may not find them, and screen readers may read them as symbol names. Keep your real name or brand in plain letters.
Can I get an invisible or blank name? +
It depends on the platform. Free Fire players report a working trick with the Hangul Filler, Roblox refuses every blank character we tested, and Discord blocks some zero-width characters. See each platform guide for details.
