Reading a keyboard

Almost every keyboard shares the same core: a function row, a number row, three letter rows and a bottom row of modifiers around the spacebar. Full-size Windows keyboards add a six-key navigation cluster (Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down), arrow keys and a numeric keypad. Laptops drop the keypad and fold the navigation keys into the arrows behind Fn. Macs rename things: Backspace becomes delete, Enter becomes return, Alt becomes option and the Windows key becomes command.

Layouts also differ by country. US (ANSI) keyboards have a wide Enter and the backslash above it; UK and European (ISO) keyboards have a tall Enter, a backslash next to the left Shift, and different symbols on several keys. When a key seems to type the wrong character, the operating system is usually set to the other layout.
