Fortnite name symbols

Your Fortnite name is your Epic Games display name. Epic sets the length (3 to 16 characters) and the content rules, but not a character list, so symbols are trial and error. Here is what is known, what is only reported, and symbols to try.

Can you use symbols?

Reported to work

Sometimes. Epic publishes no list of allowed characters; some Unicode symbols are reported to pass and others are refused.

From published “sweaty symbol” lists, not an Epic list. Japanese kana are the most common choice because they are ordinary letters to Epic’s filter.

What Epic does publish

Epic’s display name rules cover length (3 to 16 characters) and content: no vulgarity, hate speech or offensive language, no references to Epic employees, products or characters, and no personal information such as phone numbers or real names. A name that breaks the rules can be refused, or reset to a random one later.

Names are unique across Epic accounts, and Player Support cannot free up a name someone else has, whatever the state of their account.

Why symbols are trial and error

Epic has never published which characters a display name may contain. Third-party guides agree that letters, numbers, hyphens, underscores and spaces work, and report mixed results with symbols: some pass, some are refused, and a symbol that is accepted on PC can show as an empty box on a device whose font lacks it. Test a name in Account settings before you rely on it; the change itself is free.

Can you have an invisible Fortnite name?

Not documented

Epic does not document blank names. A zero-width character still counts toward the 16-character limit, and a name Epic considers empty or misleading can be refused or reset later, so treat any invisible-name trick as unreliable. The invisible character tool explains each blank character and lets you copy them.

How to change your Fortnite name

  1. Sign in at epicgames.com and open Account settings.
  2. Find Display name and choose to edit it. A lock icon means you changed it in the last two weeks.
  3. Enter the new name (3 to 16 characters) and confirm. Your email address must be verified.

Changing your Epic display name does not change your PlayStation or Xbox name: on consoles other players may see your console name instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put symbols in your Fortnite name? +

Some. Epic publishes no list of allowed characters, so it is trial and error: Japanese kana and some Unicode symbols are reported to pass, emoji are reported to be refused. Changing your display name is free once every two weeks, so you can test a name at no cost.

How long can a Fortnite name be? +

Your Epic display name must be 3 to 16 characters. Epic does not say how symbols or non-Latin characters are counted, so keep a symbol-heavy name well under 16.

How often can I change my Fortnite name? +

Once every two weeks, free, from Account settings on epicgames.com. You need a verified email address. A lock icon next to your display name means the two weeks have not passed yet.

Why does my Fortnite name show differently on PlayStation or Xbox? +

On consoles Fortnite can show your PlayStation Network or Xbox name instead of your Epic display name. Changing one does not change the other.

Can I get an invisible name in Fortnite? +

Epic does not support or document blank names. Invisible characters still count toward the 16-character limit and a name that looks empty can be refused or reset, so it is not a reliable trick.
