Instagram name symbols

Instagram has a username (@handle) and a separate name shown under your profile picture. The name and bio are where symbols and fancy fonts go. Instagram documents surprisingly little about either, so this page marks what is official and what is only reported.

Can you use symbols?

Reported to work

What Instagram actually publishes

Instagram’s Help Centre documents that notes can be up to 60 characters, that a post can have up to 5 hashtags, and that hashtags cannot contain spaces or special characters such as $ or %. It does not publish the length or character rules for names, usernames or bios.

The figures every guide repeats (30-character usernames of letters, numbers, periods and underscores; 150-character bios) are consistent across reputable sources, so we show them as widely reported. Guides disagree on the name limit, quoting 30 or 64.

Fancy fonts, search and accessibility

Styled letters in a name are separate Unicode characters, so people searching your plain name may not find you, and screen readers may read 𝓙𝓪𝓷𝓮 as “mathematical bold script capital J…” or skip it. Put your real name or keyword in plain letters and use symbols as decoration around it.

Can you have an invisible Instagram name?

Not documented

Instagram does not document invisible characters. Many people use a zero-width space or braille blank to keep blank lines in a bio or caption, but no reliable source has tested blank names. Hashtags cannot contain spaces or special characters. The invisible character tool explains each blank character and lets you copy them.

How to change your Instagram name

  1. Go to your profile and tap Edit profile (or open Accounts Centre → Profiles).
  2. Tap Name, paste your new name with symbols and save.
  3. If Instagram says you cannot change it yet, wait: users report a limit of two name changes in 14 days.

Your username is edited in the same place. You can usually go back to a username you used before unless someone else has taken it, large accounts may need a review, and followers may be notified of the change.

Frequently asked questions

How do I put symbols in my Instagram name? +

Copy a symbol or a styled name from this page, go to your profile → Edit profile → Name, paste and save. The name and bio accept symbols and emoji; the username does not.

Can I use symbols in my Instagram username? +

No. Usernames are limited to letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters (as widely reported; Instagram does not publish the rule).

How often can I change my Instagram name? +

Instagram does not publish a limit, but users report being allowed two name changes within 14 days.

How long can an Instagram note be? +

Up to 60 characters. Notes show at the top of the inbox and above your profile picture for 24 hours.

Do fancy fonts hurt Instagram search? +

They can. Styled letters are different characters from ordinary ones, so a search for your plain name may not match them. Keep your name or main keyword in plain letters.
