How the typing test works
Pick a length, then start typing: the clock starts on your first key. Correct letters turn dark, mistakes turn red, and extra letters you add to a word are shown in red after it. Press Space to move to the next word. When time runs out, or you finish the last word, you get your result with a second-by-second chart.
- WPM is your net speed: correctly typed characters, spaces included, divided by five, per minute.
- Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong.
- Accuracy is the share of correct keystrokes. Corrections do not erase the original mistake.
- Characters shows correct, incorrect, extra and missed letters.
Use Common words for a pure speed test, or Sentences for real text with capitals and punctuation. The Punctuation and Numbers options make common words harder. Pasting is disabled.
Tips to type faster
- Rest your fingers on the home row: A S D F and J K L ;. The bumps on F and J let you find it without looking.
- Look at the screen, not the keyboard. It feels slower for a week, then much faster.
- Slow down until you stop making mistakes. Speed follows accuracy.
- Practise little and often: ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
- Check your hardware: a key that sticks or misses presses costs you speed. The keyboard tester shows dead or stuck keys.

Frequently asked questions
How is typing speed (WPM) calculated? +
Words per minute counts every five correctly typed characters, including spaces, as one word, then divides by the minutes taken. This test reports net WPM, which only counts characters in the right place. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, mistakes included.
What is a good typing speed? +
Around 40 WPM is typical for adults, 50 to 65 WPM is comfortably above average, and 70 WPM or more is fast. Accuracy matters as much as speed: aim for 95% or better before pushing for a higher WPM.
How is accuracy measured? +
Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct when you typed them. Fixing a mistake with Backspace does not undo the error, so accuracy reflects how cleanly you typed, not only the final text.
Can I go back and fix a mistake? +
Yes. Backspace works inside the current word. You can also go back into the previous word if it contains an error; correct words are locked, as in most typing tests.
Does the test work on a phone or tablet? +
Yes. Tap the text to open the keyboard. Phone keyboards add autocorrect and word suggestions, which can help or hurt, so results are best compared on the same device.
Is my result saved? +
Your personal best for each test length is kept in this browser only. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How can I type faster? +
Learn to touch type from the home row (A S D F and J K L ;), keep your eyes on the screen, and practise accuracy first. Ten minutes a day of focused practice is enough to see steady gains within a month.
