Why does an emoji look different on my device? +
Each platform draws its own emoji artwork. Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft and Twitter all design their own set for the same Unicode character, so the picture changes while the meaning stays the same.
Why does an emoji show as a box or two separate symbols? +
The device or app has an older emoji font than the emoji. Newer emoji, and sequences like family or flag emoji, need a recent operating system to display as one picture.
