What the Insert key does
Insert toggles between insert mode (typing pushes existing text along) and overtype mode (typing replaces the character under the cursor). It is also half of the classic copy and paste shortcuts Ctrl+Insert and Shift+Insert, which still work in Windows terminals and many apps.
On a Mac
No Insert key. Paste with Command+V. Word for Mac has no overtype toggle on the keyboard; use Tools → Track Changes options or the Overtype setting in preferences.
On a laptop
Look for "Ins" printed small on Print Screen, Delete or F-keys and press it with Fn. Some laptops drop it entirely.

If the Insert key is missing or not working
If your text is being overwritten as you type, you pressed Insert by accident; press it again. In Word, overtype can be disabled under File → Options → Advanced → "Use the Insert key to control overtype mode". Test the key below if Shift+Insert does not paste.

Why is my typing overwriting text? +
Overtype mode is on. Press Insert once to switch back to insert mode. In Word you can also click "OVR" in the status bar if shown.
Where is the Insert key on a laptop? +
Usually shared with another key and printed as "Ins" in small text. Hold Fn and press that key.
Is there an Insert key on a Mac? +
