Where to use ASCII art text
- Terminal and CLI banners: the start-up screen of a script or command-line tool.
- Code comments: section headers in long files that are easy to spot while scrolling.
- README files: a project title inside a fenced code block on GitHub or GitLab.
- Chats and forums: Discord, Slack and Reddit, inside a code block so the spacing holds.
- Email signatures and plain-text documents where images are not an option.
Getting the spacing right
Every line of ASCII art has to line up with the ones above and below it, so it only displays correctly in a monospaced font such as Courier, Consolas, Menlo or the code font of your editor. Proportional fonts like Arial squeeze narrow characters and the letters fall apart. Long words in wide fonts can exceed 80 characters per line; keep "Wrap at 80 columns" on to break them onto several rows, or turn it off for one long banner. For stylish text that stays on one line, try the fancy text generator.
Frequently asked questions
What is ASCII art text? +
Big letters drawn with ordinary keyboard characters such as slashes, underscores, pipes and hashes. Because it uses only plain text, it works anywhere text works: terminal banners, code comments, README files, emails and chat messages in code blocks.
Why does my ASCII art look broken when I paste it? +
ASCII art needs a monospaced font, where every character is the same width. In Discord, Slack or GitHub, wrap it in a code block with three backticks. In Word or Google Docs, switch the font to Courier New or Consolas. Some apps also strip leading spaces, which misaligns the first column.
What is FIGlet? +
FIGlet is a program from 1991 that draws large letters from small text using font files with the .flf extension. Hundreds of FIGlet fonts exist; this generator uses the open-source figlet.js library and 24 of the most popular fonts, so the output matches what the figlet command prints in a terminal.
Can I use emoji or accented letters? +
FIGlet fonts cover the printable ASCII characters and many also include Latin-1 letters such as é and ñ. Emoji and other symbols are not part of the fonts and are left out of the drawing.
How do I add ASCII art to a code comment? +
Turn on "Wrap at 80 columns" so lines stay within a typical code width, copy the result and paste it inside a block comment (/* ... */ in C, JavaScript and CSS, or lines starting with # in Python and shell scripts).
Is the ASCII art free to use? +
Yes. The output is plain text you can use in personal and commercial projects. The FIGlet fonts are distributed with figlet.js and their authors allow free use of the lettering.
