About Chinese Pinyin letters

Pinyin writes the four Mandarin tones with the macron, acute, caron and grave on the vowel, plus ü for the front rounded vowel.

macOS has an ABC Extended layout that types tone marks with Option+A (macron), Option+E (acute), Option+V (caron) and Option+` (grave). On Windows the Chinese (Simplified) IME can output pinyin with tones.

ǚ, ǜ, ǘ and ǖ combine the umlaut with a tone mark and are single Unicode characters.

How to switch your keyboard to Chinese Pinyin

Windows

Open Settings → Time & Language → Language & region, add Chinese Pinyin (or open the options for your language and add the Chinese (Simplified) Microsoft Pinyin keyboard). Switch layouts with Win+Space. The current layout is shown next to the clock.

Mac

Open System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit, click +, and add ABC Extended. Switch with Control+Space or from the input menu in the menu bar. Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar to see which layout is active.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and choose Pinyin (10-key or QWERTY). Switch by holding the globe key on the keyboard.

Android

In Gboard, open Settings → Languages → Add keyboard and choose Pinyin (Gboard). Switch by holding the space bar or tapping the globe key.
