About Irish letters

Modern Irish needs only the síneadh fada, the acute accent on á, é, í, ó, ú. Traditional Gaelic type used a dot above consonants for lenition, now written as h.

The Irish layout on Windows types the fada with Alt Gr plus the vowel; the UK layout needs the UK Extended variant.

On a Mac, Option+E then the vowel gives the fada on any layout.

How to switch your keyboard to Irish

Windows

Open Settings → Time & Language → Language & region, add Irish (or open the options for your language and add the Irish or United Kingdom Extended keyboard). Switch layouts with Win+Space. The current layout is shown next to the clock.

Mac

Open System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit, click +, and add Irish or British. Switch with Control+Space or from the input menu in the menu bar. Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar to see which layout is active.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and choose Irish. Switch by holding the globe key on the keyboard.

Android

In Gboard, open Settings → Languages → Add keyboard and choose Irish. Switch by holding the space bar or tapping the globe key.
