About Hawaiian letters

Hawaiian uses the kahakō (macron) on long vowels and the ʻokina, a letter that looks like an opening single quote and marks a glottal stop.

The ʻokina is U+02BB, not the apostrophe or the ‘ quote, though both are common substitutes.

macOS includes a Hawaiian layout where the macron vowels are on Option plus the vowel and the ʻokina is on the apostrophe key.

How to switch your keyboard to Hawaiian

Windows

Open Settings → Time & Language → Language & region, add Hawaiian (or open the options for your language and add the Hawaiian keyboard). Switch layouts with Win+Space. The current layout is shown next to the clock.

Mac

Open System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit, click +, and add Hawaiian. Switch with Control+Space or from the input menu in the menu bar. Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar to see which layout is active.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and choose Hawaiian. Switch by holding the globe key on the keyboard.

Android

In Gboard, open Settings → Languages → Add keyboard and choose Hawaiian. Switch by holding the space bar or tapping the globe key.
