Shift fails in three ways: capitals do not appear, shifted symbols do not appear, or shortcuts that use Shift stop working. Almost every case traces back to an accessibility setting, Caps Lock, an app, or dirt under one of the two keys. Test both Shift keys first, because half of Shift problems affect only one of them.
Test both Shift keys
Press the left Shift, then the right Shift, in the tester above.

Fix 1: Caps Lock
With Caps Lock on, Shift produces lowercase. It sounds obvious, but a Caps Lock key without an indicator light catches people constantly. Press Caps Lock once and type again.
Fix 2: Sticky Keys
Sticky Keys makes Shift act as if it stays pressed after one tap, which breaks normal typing and can make Shift seem ignored. Pressing Shift five times turns it on.
- Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Sticky Keys off. Also turn off the Keyboard shortcut for Sticky Keys so five presses cannot re-enable it.
- Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Sticky Keys off.
Fix 3: Filter Keys and Slow Keys
These ignore brief presses, so a quick tap of Shift while typing is dropped and the letter comes out lowercase. Holding the right Shift for eight seconds turns Filter Keys on in Windows.
- Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Filter Keys off.
- Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Slow Keys off.

Fix 4: An app is capturing Shift
Test in Notepad or TextEdit. If Shift works there:
- Games and launchers bind Shift to sprint or crouch and may keep it when you tab out.
- Remote desktop and virtual machine windows pass Shift to the remote system.
- Browser extensions can hijack Shift combinations.
- Some clipboard and macro tools use Shift as a trigger.
Close them one at a time until Shift returns.
Fix 5: Layout mismatch for symbols
If capitals work but Shift+2 gives “ instead of @ or Shift+3 gives £ instead of #, Shift is fine and the layout is wrong. Press Win+Space or Control+Space and pick the layout printed on your keys. @ key not working explains the UK and US swap.
Fix 6: Remaps
Check PowerToys Keyboard Manager, Karabiner-Elements, AutoHotkey scripts and gaming keyboard software for a rule affecting Shift. Vendor software can also assign profiles per game that disable keys.
Fix 7: Driver (Windows)
Device Manager → Keyboards → right-click → Uninstall device → restart. Roll back the driver instead if Shift broke right after an update.
Hardware
Shift keys are large and, on desktop keyboards, use a stabilizer bar that can trap debris.
- Blow compressed air under both Shift keys.
- Pull the keycap (desktop) and clean the switch and stabilizer; laptop Shift keys lift from the top edge but the stabilizer wire must be re-hooked when you replace the cap.
- If the key needs a hard press or registers intermittently, the switch or dome is worn.

Shift shortcuts that stop working
If typing capitals is fine but Shift combinations fail, the combination itself is the clue.

Capitals without Shift while you fix it
- Tap Caps Lock for the letter, then tap it off. Slow but reliable.
- On Windows, the on-screen keyboard (Win+Ctrl+O) has a working Shift you can click.
- Copy any capital or symbol you need from Copy and paste symbols; the accent keyboard has capital accented letters too.
- Remap Caps Lock to Shift as a permanent stand-in with PowerToys or Karabiner.

- Test both Shift keys in the tester.
- Caps Lock off.
- Sticky Keys off, and its five-press shortcut off.
- Filter Keys or Slow Keys off.
- Test in a plain text editor; close games, remote desktop, extensions.
- Fix the layout if only symbols are wrong.
- Remove remaps; reinstall the driver.
- Clean; remap Caps Lock to Shift; replace.

Why does Shift type lowercase letters? +
Caps Lock is on. With Caps Lock on, Shift reverses it and produces lowercase. Press Caps Lock once and try again.
