Doubled letters have two very different causes. Either the operating system’s key repeat kicks in too quickly, so a normal press counts as a held key, or the key’s switch is bouncing and sending two presses for one. The tester above tells them apart: a bouncing switch shows two presses for a single sharp tap, while a short repeat delay only doubles when you hold slightly longer.

Fix the repeat settings
Windows
- Press Win+R, type
control keyboardand press Enter. - Move Repeat delay toward Long.
- Move Repeat rate toward Slow if letters run away when you hold a key.
- Click Apply and test in the box on that dialog.
Filter Keys, under Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard, has its own repeat settings and can also be used to ignore repeated presses; more on that below.
Mac
- Open System Settings → Keyboard.
- Set Delay until repeat toward Long.
- Set Key repeat rate toward Slow if needed.
A shorter delay is popular with programmers, so a previous user or a tweak guide may have set it very short.
Fix switch chatter
Clean the switch
Dust on the contacts is the leading cause. Power off, blow compressed air around and, on a desktop keyboard, into the switch with the keycap removed. Press the key 30 to 50 times to work debris out.
Update the firmware
Mechanical keyboard makers often improve debounce in firmware. Check the vendor’s software (Logitech G Hub, Razer Synapse, Corsair iCUE, Keychron Launcher, VIA or QMK Toolbox for custom boards). For QMK and VIA keyboards, a longer debounce time can be set in the firmware.
Replace the switch
If one key chatters and the keyboard has hot-swap sockets, pull the switch and drop in a new one. On soldered boards it is a repair with a soldering iron. Chatter that spreads across many keys usually means the keyboard is old or was exposed to humidity; replacing it is more practical.
Use a software debounce
On Windows, small free utilities filter presses of the same key that arrive within a few milliseconds of each other. Search for “keyboard chattering fix”. They work as a stopgap while you replace a switch, at the cost of occasionally eating a genuine fast double tap.
Filter Keys as a stopgap
Windows Filter Keys can ignore repeated keystrokes deliberately.
- Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Filter Keys → turn on.
- Choose Ignore quick keystrokes and set the shortest interval you can live with.
This slows normal typing, so use it only until the hardware is fixed.
Other causes
- Laptop spill. Residue makes contacts bounce. Dry for 48 hours, then clean; if doubling persists the membrane is damaged. Laptop keyboard keys not working covers liquid damage.
- Wireless interference. Rare, but a lagging wireless keyboard can deliver a delayed duplicate. Move the dongle or re-pair; see Keyboard lag or delay.
- Remote desktop. Latency can cause key repeats on the remote machine. Lengthen the repeat delay on the remote system, not the local one.
- Accessibility features. Sticky Keys and Slow Keys change how presses are counted; turn them off while diagnosing.
- Driver. Device Manager → Keyboards → Uninstall device → restart.
Test for chatter properly
A quick way to separate chatter from settings is to type a line of single, deliberate taps in the tester: press a key firmly, release cleanly, wait half a second, repeat. Genuine chatter still doubles some presses. A short repeat delay never doubles a clean tap. If you can only reproduce doubling by resting on the key, the settings are the cause.
Chatter also has a signature in ordinary text: the doubled letter is always the same key, and it doubles regardless of how fast you type. A settings problem doubles whatever key you happen to linger on.
Keyboards prone to chatter
- Mechanical switches with several years of use, especially Cherry MX Blue and some Outemu clones, develop chatter as contacts oxidize.
- Keyboards stored or used in humid rooms. Moisture on the contacts causes bouncing that a dry environment cures.
- Budget keyboards after a spill. Sugar residue keeps the contact partly closed.
- Wireless keyboards with weak batteries can deliver a delayed duplicate keystroke, which looks like chatter but disappears once charged.
- Keyboards with aggressive debounce settings in custom firmware (QMK boards set to a very low debounce value for speed).
A note on macOS press-and-hold
On a Mac, holding a letter opens the accent menu instead of repeating, so doubled letters there are almost never a repeat setting. If a Mac doubles letters, suspect the switch or, on 2015 to 2019 MacBooks, the butterfly keyboard, which Apple covered under a repair program for exactly this fault.

- Lengthen repeat delay and slow the repeat rate.
- Clean the switch; update firmware.
- Replace the switch on a hot-swap board.
- Software debounce or Filter Keys as a stopgap.
